BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar Rematch In The Works

UFC News – MMA And UFC News From Syndicated Sources

BJ PennFormer lightweight title-holder BJ Penn announced today that the UFC is working on an immediate rematch with newly-crowned 155-pound champ Frankie Edgar, who upset Penn at Saturday’s UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi to claim the title.

“The UFC called us yesterday and there’s probably a rematch in the works with Frankie Edgar,” Penn said in a video on BJPenn.com. “It’s still tentative, but it looks like they want to do the fight again.”

After earning a unanimous decision over Penn at UFC 112, Edgar (12-1) has now won four-straight since suffering his lone career loss to Gray Maynard two years ago, while Penn (15-6-1) had won five-straight at lightweight dating back to 2007 prior to Saturday’s loss.

Despite an undefeated record and seven-straight UFC victories over the likes of Edgar, Roger Huerta, and Nate Diaz, Maynard (9-0) will apparently need another win before getting a title shot and will likely fight on August 28 at the UFC’s Boston debut against fellow contender Kenny Florian, who is coming off a March 31 win over Takanori Gomi, but is currently sidelined with a staph infection in his knee.

While Penn didn’t announce a date for his potential rematch with Edgar, the bout is likely the front-runner to headline the Boston card, tentatively UFC 117.
