Joe Stevenson vs. Takanori Gomi Expected for UFC on Versus 2 on August 1
UFC News – MMA And UFC News From Syndicated Sources
A lightweight metchup between UFC veteran Joe Stevenson and former PRIDE champ Takanori Gomi is in the works for August 1 at UFC on Versus 2 in Salt Lake City, Utah, according to Heavy.com.
The bout, which is nearly finalized, is expected to air on the main card of the UFC’s second Versus-televised event.
After having his four-fight win streak snapped in a 2008 loss to lightweight champ BJ Penn, Stevenson (31-11) has gone just 3-3, rebounding from back-to-back losses to lightweight contenders Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez with wins over Nate Diaz and Spencer Fisher, before dropping a unanimous decision to George Sotiropoulos at February’s UFC 110.
Gomi (31-6) made his UFC debut last month in the main event of UFC Fight Night 21, suffering a third-round submission to Florian, dropping him to just 2-3 over his last five fights.
The main event for UFC on Versus 2 has yet to be confirmed, but that card is also expected to include John Howard vs. Jake Ellenberger.
