Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard Expected for August 28 UFC Event in Boston

With the UFC planning an immediate rematch between newly-crowned lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and former title-holder BJ Penn, contenders Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard are expected to meet at an August 28 UFC event at the TD Garden in Boston with the next shot at the 155-pound title on the line.
Earlier today, Florian formally announced on Twitter that he’d be fighting at the pay-per-view event, though his appearance on the card has been expected since it was first reported in December, and hinted in an interivew with The Boston Herald that a matchup with Maynard is likely, though nothing has yet been signed.
Florian (11-4) challenged Penn for the title in August following a six-fight win streak, but suffered a fourth-round submission, then rebounded with a second-round sub of Clay Guida in December. After submitting former PRIDE champ Takanori Gomi in the third-round at UFC Fight Night 21 in March, “KenFlo” was underwent surgery for a staph infection in his knee, but was today released from the hospital and will soon resume training to prepare for his August return.
A semifinalist on The Ultimate Fighter 5, Maynard (9-0) began his UFC career with a no contest against Rob Emerson due to a double KO but has since reeled off seven-straight wins, including a notable victory over Edgar in 2008 as well as recent wins over Jim Miller, Roger Huerta, and Nate Diaz.
The UFC’s Boston debut on August 28, tentatively UFC 118, could be headlined by the rematch between Edgar and Penn, though the event has yet to be formally announced.
